STSM, ITC Conference Grants, and Virtual Networking Tools

Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs)

The Action will offer several Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) grants to encourage institutional visits aimed at supporting individual mobility, fostering collaboration between individuals.

STSM applicants must be engaged in an official research programme as a PhD Student or postdoctoral fellow or can be employed by, or affiliated to, an institution, organisation or legal entity which has within its remit a clear association with performing research. The institutions / organisation or legal entity where applicants pursue their main strand of research are considered as Home Institutions. The Host Institution is the institution / organisation that will host the successful applicant.

The selection of successful STSM applicants shall be done so in consideration of the scientific scope of the proposed mission and how the mission can support the Action in achieving its scientific objectives. There should be special considerations made by the Action MC with respect to supporting COST policies on promoting gender balance, enabling Early Career Investigators (ECI), broadening geographical inclusiveness.

Eligible STSM applicants are invited to submit their applications online at the following web address:

https://e-services.cost.eu/stsm

Full details on the STSM grants, including information on selection criteria and financial support, may be found here.

Over the course of the Action there will be regular open calls for application. The latest open call was announced on 16 July 2020. For details please see: CA18232-STSMs-call-JUL2020.pdf.

Please direct any enquiries to the STSM Coordinator for the Action, András Bátkai.

Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC) CONFERENCE GRANTS

In order to encourage active participation of researchers from Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITCs) and accordance with COST policy, the Action will offer a number of conference travel grants to Early Career Investigators (ECIs) based in any ITC.

These grants are awarded in order to enable younger researchers who may not otherwise have access to sufficient travel funds to present their Action-related work at any conference not directly connected to the Action. They may cover all or part of the conference fee and travel and accommodation expenses, in accordance with COST rules and availability of funds, but should be understood as a contribution to overall expenses and may not cover all costs. Funding must be approved before the conference, but will only be paid out afterwards, upon delivery of a suitable short report on the conference and the presentation by the successful applicant.

To be eligible, applicants must satisfy the COST criteria for being an ECI (currently defined as having received their doctorate less than 8 years before joining the action, or being a doctural student) and be based primarily at an institution located in an ITC. It is also necessary that the applicant present a talk or a poster on a subject related to the Action at the conference.

Over the course of the Action there will be regular open calls for applications. Details of each call will be provided here upon its announcement. All applications must be submitted, and will be processed, via the e-COST system. Applications will be evaluated based upon scientific merit, relevance of the application and the conference to the Action, and geographical and gender balance among grantees. Women candidates are explicitly encouraged to apply.

Full details on the ITC conference grants, including more details on how they work and step-by-step instructions on how to apply, may be found here.

A full, up-to-date list of ITCs is maintained here.

Over the course of the Action there will be regular open calls for application. The open call for grants in Grant Period 2 is to be found here: CA18232-conference-grants-call-JUL2020.pdf

On 25 January 2021, COST Action announced a call for grants to pay the online conference fee of young researchers based in any participating Inclusiveness Target Country to attend the 8th European Congress of Mathematics

Please direct any enquiries to the ITC Conference Grant Manager for the Action, James Kennedy.

Virtual Networking Tools:

VIRTUAL NETWORKING SUPPORT (VNS) GRANT and VIRTUAL MOBILITY (VM) GRANTS

On 28 April 2021, the COST Association introduced two new types of grants, in form of a pilot scheme running until 31 October 2021, to build capacity and spread the uptake of virtual collaboration across different research communities:

1 Virtual Networking Support (VNS) Grants

These grants aim at promoting virtual collaboration as a complement to traditional ways of collaboration within the research and innovation communities. This mechanism intends to stimulate virtual collaboration among the members of a given Action.

The selection of a successful grantee shall be based on contributions to the overall objectives of the Action and the implementation of the COST Excellence and Inclusiveness Policy.

The open call for the Virtual Networking Support Grant in Grant Period 2 was published on 21 June 2021 and is to be found here.

The successful applicant shall take the Virtual Networking Support (VNS) Manager role in this COST Action. This role will include supporting the call, evaluation process, and coordination of Virtual Mobility Grants.

All applications must be submitted, and will be processed, via the e-COST system.

The call was open until Monday, 5 July 2021.

Aleksandra Puchalska was selected as the grantee and took the Virtual Networking Support (VNS) Manager role in this COST Action.

2 Virtual Mobility (VM) Grants

These grants aim at strengthening the existing networks by allowing scientists to foster collaboration in a virtual setting, to exchange knowledge, learn new techniques, and disseminate the Action results. A maximum of 6 Virtual Mobility Grants per Action per Grant Period can be awarded.

The open call for Grant Period 2 was published on 23 July 2021. It is to be found here
